Linda Announces February 22, 2011

Run for State Legislature

ANNOUNCEMENT

Ladies, gentlemen, honored guests, those who live in East Haven and those who reside in other parts of the State, good evening.

Last March I began an incredible adventure — I ran for State Representative of the 99th District against the 24 year incumbent, Michael Lawlor. Many of you who stand here before me tonight took that journey with me — from beginning to end and everywhere in the middle. It was a good campaign, no a great one. We only lost by some 700 votes by the closest margin ever. We put up the kind of “keep it clean” fight that isn’t normally fought in the East Haven political arena.

As you all know by now, Mr. Lawlor, I guess he’s just a “mister” now, has decided to give up his seat to become the undersecretary for Criminal Justice Policy and Planning, a position offered him by Office of Policy and Management Secretary Ben Barnes.

Sounds like a movie script, doesn’t it? As Forest Gump always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates . . ..” I never imagined that I would be standing here at Il Salice just two short months after Election Day with a second chance sitting in the palm of my hand.

My sincere thanks to Governor Malloy.

As with any second chance, however, it MUST not be taken for granted or wasted. This “it came from out of nowhere” opportunity must be seized and acted upon. It’s a gift, that’s for sure, but keep in mind it’s one that requires your help and support to keep it going.

So, it is with great pleasure and reborn enthusiasm and energy that I am formally announcing my candidacy in East Haven’s first Special Election for State Representative of their great 99th district. I believed it in 2010 and still do today, that I am the best person to represent East Haven in Hartford.

I am married to Eugene D. Monaco, whose family has lived in East Haven for over 60 years. His mother was Etta Monaco, East Haven’s elementary school nurse for 25 years. His father, Daniel Monaco served as deacon at Saint Clare’s and then at Saint Bernadette.

I have two grown sons. My oldest son Christopher is active duty in the Air Force currently stationed in Afghanistan. He will be there throughout this campaign. Many of you were able to meet him and his new wife last summer at Italian night. My youngest son, Stuart is completing his studies at the University of Connecticut and has a full time job waiting for him.

In 1994 when an amazing job opportunity in Connecticut became available, my family moved here from Houston. One year later, I was divorced. I had fallen in love with Connecticut and chose to stay here to raise my boys.

I received my Bachelors of Science Degree from Texas A&M University, 30 years ago. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Quinnipiac University law school 10 years ago.

I am a member of Phi Delta Phi, an honor fraternity. I was selected for Who’s Who among American Law Students. I also received many awards in law school.

I am licensed to practice law in Connecticut and Florida. I have also been admitted to the Federal Bar for the second district. I am a member of the American Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association and many other legal groups. I have taught continuing learning education classes to attorneys in the real estate area. I have taught a class at Branford Hall in Real Estate Law in the nighttime Paralegal program.

Currently I am general practitioner attorney here in East Haven, with my office on Hemingway Avenue. I have had my own practice since January 2005.

As part of the New Haven County Bar Association, I have chosen to participate in the Modest Means program. I also initiated and provided services for the Ask a Lawyer program here in East Haven, which will be continuing this year

We need jobs. To create jobs we need someone who understands both business and law and will be able to help the passage of legislation that will enable the creation of new jobs, and encourage business growth, something that has not happened in Connecticut since 1989. We need new manufacturers to come into Connecticut, not to leave like Marlin’s and so many others because of our current laws. I am experienced in business, creating jobs and in the law. I understand what needs to be done to make Connecticut business friendly. I am the person to help make these changes.

We need to send a message to Hartford, No more taxes! We cannot afford to pay the taxes now and we certainly cannot afford any increase no matter how small. We need to make our tax money work harder for us. We need to cut back and tighten our belts. We have all made sacrifices in our personal lives and now it is time for Hartford to make sacrifices, not by cutting programs, but by cutting the FAT. I am the mouthpiece that will yell at the top of my lungs, if necessary, “NO MORE TAXES,” enough is enough. Our property taxes have gone up by almost 20% and our seniors, who have not had an increase in their Social Security checks for the second year in a row just can’t stand the pain that eating away at their retirement savings. I am the voice that East Haven deserves and needs in Hartford.

East Haven is by far one of the best places to live in Connecticut. We have the most beautiful beaches. We have wonderful parks. And we have the GREATEST people. We need and deserve the Best representation. I am the best Representative for East Haven.

Thank you for coming tonight and let’s Get Out the Vote and win the election.

Wednesday October 20th - Linda and the "Ask a Lawyer" Program

Today Linda donated her time to meet with East Haven folks as part of the New Haven County Bar Association’s Ask a Lawyer program. She started the program in our town and it's been very successful. She will be at every session, usually with another attorney.

The Ask a Lawyer program is designed to provide members of the community with general legal information; an attorney meets with the participant and provides a free 10-15 minute consultation. If the individual requires additional assistance, they are referred to our Lawyer Referral Service or a social service agency. No appointment is necessary. Consultations are given on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ask a Lawyer program will be held from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. on one Wednesday a month at East Haven's Hagaman Memorial Library at 227 Main Street. November 17 and December 15 are the next dates.
